Shakira and her longtime friend Gerard Pique have announced their separation.
“We are sorry to confirm that we are separating,” the couple said in a joint statement on Saturday. “We ask for privacy at this time for the well-being of our children, who are our top priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.
The couple first confirmed their relationship in March 2011 and have since welcomed two sons: Milan, 9 and Sasha, 7. They first met on the set of Shakira’s music video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa”).

The song is a monument as an official song for the 2010 World Cup.

The news of their separation came after the Spanish newspaper El Periodico reported that the professional footballer had moved back to his house in Barcelona, away from Shakira and their two sons.
After the news was announced, fans said Shakira’s lyrics in her new song “Te Felecito” may have revealed problems in her relationship.

“To complement you, I smashed to pieces / I was warned, but I didn’t pay attention,” she sings. “I realized yours was fake / It was the last straw / Don’t tell me you’re sorry, it seems sincere, but I know you well and I know you’re lying.”
In February, the Hips Don’t Lie singer spoke about the couple’s controversy over accuracy.
