Max Verstappen topped both Canadian GP training sessions on Friday

Max Verstappen doubled the Canadian GP, ahead of Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the second session on Friday.

The World Cup leader appeared in top form as he led a second run from near the start to the end of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, recording 1: 14.127 and beating Leclerc by almost a tenth of a second.

Leclerc, who is expected to receive at least a 10-seat penalty on the net for Sunday’s race amid speculation he will choose to take a new engine, was the only driver to get close to Verstappen, and his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Saiz more from tenth back to third.

After pushing Verstappen hard in recent weeks, Sergio Pérez had no draw for his Red Bull team-mate, more than a second behind the Dutchman in 11th place.

Lewis Hamilton was once again struggling, with the seven-time world champion describing his Mercedes as “unmanageable” as he finished 13th while his teammate George Russell was seventh.

Taking advantage of the battles of Perez and Mercedes were former world champions Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, who impressed with fourth for Aston Martin and fifth for Alpine, respectively.
