On Thursday, Hamilton’s public health services hosted a pop-up monkey vaccination clinic.
The clinic will be open by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the East End Public Health Clinic at 247 Centennial Pkwy. N.
In a press release, a city official said that although there are no confirmed cases locally and the risk of infection is low for Hamilton residents, the city is working with various “Public Health Units in the Toronto and Hamilton area to ensure that there are proactive actions taken in response to the virus. “
People with monkeypox often experience symptoms such as fever, body aches, and rashes; most recover within weeks without the need for medical attention.
They said they were aimed at giving the vaccine to those most at risk.
“The clinic is designed for members of the community aged 18 and over who are transsexual or cisgender individuals who self-identify as men and belong to the community of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
They also encouraged people who met at least one of the following criteria to receive the vaccine:
- People who have had contact with a person who recently tested positive for monkeypox.
- People who have had two or more sexual partners in the last three weeks.
- Those who have been diagnosed with an infection with chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis in the last two months.
- People who have visited bathrooms, sex clubs and other places of sexual contact in the last three weeks, including workers and volunteers.
- People who have had anonymous or casual sex in the last three weeks.
Residents wishing to receive the vaccine can make an appointment by calling the public health hotline at 905-974-9848, option 7.
