Harini Logan is the 2022 Scripps Spelling Bee National Champion after a historical spell

The native of San Antonio, Texas, received a trophy and a check for $ 50,000.

Harini faced Vikram Raju, 12, in the spelling, a format that tests contestants how many words they can spell correctly in 90 seconds.

Harini spelled 21 of the 26 words correctly, while Vikram spelled 15 of the 19 words correctly.

“I honestly think it’s so surreal, this is my fourth time at Bee,” Harini said on stage, holding the trophy. “It’s such a dream, it’s my fourth bee and I’m so amazed.”

Regarding the first spell of its kind, Harini said, “At first I was a little restless and decided to do it … I just had to take a deep breath and tell myself to go out there and do my best and whatever happens happens.”

Spelling Bee, which includes elementary and high school students who write words that would make most adults stumble, has had a turbulent year.

Due to Covid-19, the competition was canceled in 2020 – a significant change for what is considered to be the largest and longest-running educational program in the country. (The National Spelling Bee was launched in 1925.) The bee returned last year, but with a few changes. The event included three rounds, completed virtually, not in person, with 209 competitors – from 562 in 2019. The finals were then held in person at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida, not at the National Port of Maryland, where the event usually takes place. conducted in recent years. Although still lower than before the pandemic, this year began with 234 competitors, an increase from last year. Of those who started, only 12 took part in the final race on Thursday. Another big change this year was the Bee’s television broadcast. Despite almost three decades on ESPN, the race aired on ION and Bounce. ESPN has been home to the Scripps National Spelling Bee since 1994, longer than any of the current racers have ever been alive.

Preliminary rounds began on Tuesday, with the quarterfinals and semifinals taking place on Wednesday.

This year’s host was Levar Burton. The Emmy and Grammy winner hosted the semi-finals and the final round of the event.

In a statement in December, Burton called the position “an honor.”

“Like many people, I look forward to the race every year and I am excited to be part of this wonderful tradition that celebrates excellence,” he said.
