Start date: Peak of the Hermits: April 6, 2022; Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022
Cause: Peak hermits: spot fires from prescribed burning; Kalf Canyon: under investigation
Location: Located near Galinas Canyon – Fuels: Heavy mixed conifers, ponderose pine, shrubs and grass
Highlights: Today, the incoming Type 1 Incident Management Team in Southwest Area 1 (SWIMT 1) and Type 1, California Team 2 are monitoring the current teams to ensure a smooth transition on Sunday. Active fire behavior is forecast today at critically dry relative humidity and higher temperatures; however, with weaker winds, the fire is not expected to increase significantly. Yesterday, all the planes assigned to the accident were on fire all day. Under such conditions today, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft will rise again to support firefighters on the ground. Residents of San Miguel, Mora, Taos and Colfax counties must remain on high alert for changes in evacuation status and road closures.
Operations: In the north, structure protection teams are working around Angostura to prepare homes and valuables as the fire heads for Angostura’s path today. Firefighters are working in the areas of Chacon, Holman, Cleveland and Mora on the edge of the fire to mitigate the effects. Yesterday, the fire remained outside the Chacon Valley as it moved north. Above Mora, crews build additional bulldozer lines as the fire descends the Comanche Canyon. Firefighters continue to work on highways 518, 121, 434 and 442 corridors to and around Black Lake. Today, the fire is expected to end near Guadalupe South, and structure protection groups are doing a lot of work there. The crews worked west of the Cooks Peak fire and east of the Hermites and Kalf Canyon fires to open dosing lines and connect roads in the middle. Towards Highway 442, crews complete a berth in accordance with Martinez Ranch Road.
To the south, crews are watching Mineral Hills and San Geronimo to make sure nothing else is in danger. The fire remains active around Barilas Peak. Large and very large air tankers (LAT and VLAT) managed to launch a retarder on this line yesterday to help ground crews. Firefighters are working directly on this edge, and additional lines are being built to the south. Crews are also building a bulldozer line to the desert border above Bull Canyon and connecting some roads and trails. The fire crossed the ridge of Mount Elk and slowly moved into an old fiery scar. A lot of smoke will come out of this area. Around Rosiada and Gascony, firefighters are still working to secure the edge of the fire. The fire continues to spread in the Pecos Desert in areas on the northwest side.
