The Ontario Provincial Police says the provincial police supervisor relied on his mandate after an incident on Highway 417 at night.
OPP officials in Ottawa were called to a section of the highway near Udrof Avenue shortly after midnight on Thursday after someone fell off an overpass and was injured.
The western lanes in the area were closed overnight, but have reopened ever since.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Department is currently involved.
SIU says the victim, a 61-year-old man, was on the edge of the overpass when police were called.
“When the first police officer arrived, the man stood at the barrier and held on to the sign,” the SIU said in a statement. “The officer contacted the man briefly before the man fell on the highway below. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.”
Two investigators and a forensic scientist have been appointed in the case. Witnesses are asked to contact SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online at siu.on.ca.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates police conduct that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and / or the firing of a firearm against a person.
