Rich McCormick, an emergency physician and retired Marine, will win the Republican nomination for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, CNN projects.

McCormick, who won multiple votes in the May 24 primary, faced lawyer Jake Evans in Tuesday’s run-off for the Atlanta subway area. Although Evans has benefited from the approval of former President Donald Trump, he has not improved much of his 24% turnout in the primary.

McCormick, meanwhile, had the support of others in the Republican Party, including a minority whip in the House of Representatives, Steve Scaliz, as well as PAC support for the Growth Club. He was also the leading fundraiser in this field, raising more than $ 3 million and almost double what Evans brought.

Although lacking the support of the former president, McCormick is running as a MAGA-style conservative.

This is McCormick’s second candidacy for Congress. In 2020, he lost a close race to the Democratic Republic of Caroline Bordeaux in the neighboring 7th arrondissement. After the census-driven redistribution placed part of the old 7th District in the new 6th District, McCormick launched his offer of a more Republican-friendly seat. (The current member of the House of Sixth, Democrat Lucy McBatt, defeated Bordeaux last month in primary elections to represent the new Seventh.)

The new district is heavily Republican, and McCormick is the clear favorite to win the seat in November.
