Latest Ukraine-Russia news: Zelensky says capital attack requires “appropriate, powerful response”

At least 10 people were injured after Russia fired rockets at Kyiv on Thursday during a visit by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The rockets shook the central Shevchenko district and one of them hit the lower floors of a 25-storey residential building, injuring at least 10 people.

Rescue officials said one man lost a leg and others were injured as they were trapped in the rubble when two buildings were hit.

The bombing came just an hour after Guterres concluded talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

“There was an attack on Kyiv … it shocked me, not because I’m here, but because Kyiv is a sacred city for both Ukrainians and Russians,” Guterres told Portugal’s RTP.

The bombings are the boldest attack on the capital since Russian forces withdrew weeks ago.

President Zelenski said the attack required “an appropriate, powerful response”.

“Russian missiles flew into the city. Five missiles. That speaks volumes about Russia’s true attitude towards global institutions, the Russian leadership’s efforts to humiliate the UN and everything the organization represents,” he said Thursday night.

“We must not lose vigilance. We must not think that the war is over.”
