Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Ajax for defender Lisandro Martinez.
Sky Sports News understands the payment structure of the deal is being discussed, with the defender keen to join Erik Ten Hag’s side this summer.
United have previously said they will not overpay for the Ajax player. Sky Sports News revealed earlier this month that Martinez had informed Dutch club Ajax of his desire to move to the Premier League.
Arsenal were also interested in the Argentina international and while the Gunners’ style of play – along with the prospect of playing for Mikel Arteta – appealed to Martinez, he appears to have opted for Old Trafford.
Martinez offers brains, brawn and versatility

“Last season, Martinez averaged more passes per 90 minutes than any other Eredivisie player, while only two players directed more forward passes per 90 minutes.
“These numbers highlight Martinez’s ability to play through opposing lines, but he is also adept at switching play and picking out teammates at longer ranges.” At Ajax last season, no player had more successful long passes in 90 minutes.
“Picked Ajax’s Player of the Year for his role in last season’s Eredivisie title triumph, Martinez is just 5ft 9in tall, making him small for a centre-back.
“Last season at Ajax he made more headers (29) than any other player and won 79 of his 112 aerial duels, giving him a success rate of 71 per cent and putting him second only to Harry Maguire among current Manchester United and Arsenal central defenders.
“Martinez can expect to face more demanding opponents in the Premier League, of course, but he is also aided by a good reading of the game. He is known for anticipating attackers’ runs and positioning himself smartly to make tackles and crosses.
“These qualities, combined with his versatility and technical prowess, make him even more attractive to Premier League suitors.”

Manchester United remain calm on their stance on a potential deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, while the signing of Christian Eriksen is “progressing positively”.
United have a “broad agreement” with Barcelona over the fee – believed to be €65m (£56m) plus performance-related add-ons.
Chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtaugh are continuing talks with Barca representatives over the transfer, but the deal is problematic as De Jong has back-to-back wage issues. He is believed to be owed £17million after taking a pay cut during the pandemic.
United continue to insist that in-demand striker Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale.
