LIVE: The area was evacuated and the police detached from an artillery shell found in the canal – updates

Police evacuated an area in Ashton after finding an artillery shell in a canal. Emergency services responded to the incident right next to Cavendish Street in the city center and a cordon is currently being laid.

The incident was reported for the first time at around 1.30pm on Sunday (June 19th). Citizens are urged to avoid the area.

In a statement, GMP Tameside North and East said: “Emergency services are currently responding to a report that an artillery shell was found in a canal near Cavendish Street, Ashton-under-Line.

“As a precautionary measure, the surrounding area has been evacuated and a cordon has been set up. Members of the community have been asked to avoid the area. “
