M8: A traffic jam as a ‘person of concern’ call is followed by a four-vehicle crash

The motorway was closed in both directions between J3A and J4 (Whitburn) just before midday on Saturday as police were called to a ‘person of concern’ with pictures released by Traffic Scotland showing a long holdup of traffic on the eastbound road.

Blackburn Road towards Bathgate was also closed while officers attended the incident.

One driver stuck at the back posted on social media: ‘I’m currently parking on the #M8 eastbound near Bathgate as it’s closed due to a police incident. Avoid at all costs.”

Photos posted on Twitter showed drivers leaving their stationary cars as queues continued.

At around 3.35pm, as traffic began to move slowly again, the misery for motorists continued as the M8 closed in both directions to allow an air ambulance to attend a four-car crash on the eastbound carriageway between J4A and J4.

The westbound lane was reopened around 5 p.m., with eastbound traffic moving slowly as the road was cleared.
