MEXICO CITY – Mexico on Saturday announced the first confirmed case of monkeypox in the country, according to Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatel.
The patient is a 50-year-old permanent resident of New York who is being treated in Mexico City, Lopez-Gatel reported on Twitter.
“He was probably infected in the Netherlands,” Lopez-Gatel wrote, adding that the patient was isolated and in stable condition.
On Friday, Argentina became the first country in Latin America to report a case of monkeypox. About 20 non-endemic countries have reported outbreaks of the virus, with more than 200 confirmed or suspected infections, mostly in Europe.
Outbreaks are alarming because monkeypox, which is spread through close contact and was first discovered in monkeys, is found mainly in West and Central Africa and only occasionally spreads elsewhere. (Report by Diego Ore; edited by Sandra Mahler)
