Monkeypox: An alleged case reported in New Brunswick

New Brunswick is the first maritime province to be suspected of having monkeypox.

Health Minister Dorothy Shepard revealed the news during a period of questions at the New Brunswick legislature on Wednesday morning.

Shepard said the alleged case was sent to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg last month.

She said she could not confirm where the case was reported or whether the person was a New Brunswick resident, saying she allowed public health to take the lead.

“Public health has worked with COVID for several years,” Shepard said during the question period.

CTV News contacted the New Brunswick health department for more information, but did not receive a response by noon on Wednesday.

According to the World Health Organization, the global number of cases of monkeypox has risen to more than 550 in 30 countries.

This is an evolving story. It will be updated.
