MTG spreads baseless transphobic rumors about the shortage of tampons

  • Marjorie Taylor Green is wrong to say that trans men are causing the current shortage of tampons.
  • The legislator said in her podcast that trans men “buy tampons”, hence the shortage.
  • Problems with the global supply chain and consumer demand are the real causes of the shortage.

On Monday, Georgia spokeswoman Marjorie Taylor Green spread a baseless, transphobic rumor accusing trans people of the country’s continuing shortage of tampons.

“The men took over. They are “women of the year” in each category, in the women’s categories. And the latest news is that there is a shortage of tampons, and that’s probably because men buy tampons, “Green said in an episode of her MTG Live podcast.

However, the Georgia MP did not provide evidence of his baseless allegation of a shortage of tampons in some parts of the country.

Earlier this month, Walgreens and CVS warned consumers that demand had exceeded their supply of tampons. Walgreens said it was experiencing “brand-specific shortages” in some areas, while CVS said its suppliers “failed to fulfill the full quantities of orders placed,” Insider’s Gabriel Bienas said.

Tampon manufacturers such as Procter & Gamble are now trying to increase product production.

Tampon companies attribute the shortage of roar pads to the supply chain and increased consumer demand. For example, a spokesman for Procter & Gamble cited a July 2020 Tampax ad featuring Amy Schumer, which they said has caused demand for the company’s tampons to increase by 8% in two years.

In his podcast, Green claimed that there was a “war against women” and called for places that “put tampons in men’s bathrooms.” Although she did not specify where such activities take place, some public places such as companies and schools have started providing tampons in men’s bathrooms.

Green also tweeted about the problem, doubling his position.

“People who are menstruating can’t find tampons. Has anyone checked the warehouses at the border, where the whole baby formula is loaded from floor to ceiling on the shelves? Or maybe some men’s restrooms? Apparently they are there, “Green tweeted Monday night.

Green has been linked to several cases of transphobic behavior. It is known that she put up a sign that she has “two sexes, male and female”, opposite the office of the representative Marie Newman, who has a trans daughter.

Green also recently put forward an unfounded conspiracy theory that emerged after the shooting at a school in Texas, citing a QAnon-related claim that the shooter was a trans man.
