NBA Draft Draft 2022, extracts: Experts in magic tricks, occupying Paolo Banchero at number 1, creating chaos

There are usually not many surprises in the NBA Draft at this day and age, but Thursday night started big as Orlando Magic chose Duke striker Paolo Banchero with a total of №1. For weeks, expectations were that they would take Jabbari Smith out of Auburn, and it is still unclear whether this is all a complicated smokescreen or they changed their minds at the last minute.

It is reported that Magic has never hosted Banchero for an official training session or interview in Orlando, which suggests that it may be the last.

In any case, the Oklahoma City Thunder then pulled the big man Chet Holmgren out of Gonzaga, as expected, as the Houston Rockets went with Smith to finish the top three. The missiles were probably planned by Banchero, but Smith still has to fit in well as a striker with a sharp shot to match Jalen Green.

Of course, no draft could be completed without the Sacramento Kings doing something out of the box, and they took Keegan Murray at No. 4 as the overall pick, despite almost all the predictions that suggest that Jaden Ivy of Purdue is definitely the fourth most good player. Maybe they really believe in Murray, or maybe they were afraid to take guard with their first choice for the third year in a row.

Anyway, it turned out for the Detroit Pistons, who were happy to take Ivy at number 5. After winning Cade Cunningham with the first choice last year, they already have the talents of a great young back field.
