Nick Cave’s son Jethro Lazenby has died at the age of 30, the musician announced today – seven years after the star’s 15-year-old son Arthur fell and died from a rock in Brighton.
Jethro, who lived in Melbourne, was released on bail two days before his death after being in prison for leaving his mother “bruised and bleeding” after kneeling in her face during a cigarette dispute.
“I can confirm with great sadness that my son Jethro has died,” Cave said in a statement this afternoon. “We will be grateful for the privacy of the family at this time.”
The Australian singer, best known as the frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, was struck for the first time by a tragedy in July 2015, when Arthur fell 60 feet to his death from a cliff in Owingdane, near Brighton. The 15-year-old boy, described by his family as a “beautiful, happy, loving boy”, was taking the hallucinogenic drug LSD, an investigation was later heard.
Jethro was born to Melbourne-based mother Boe Lazenby in 1991, who was in a relationship with Cave at the time.
He was released on bail from the Melbourne Investigation Center on Thursday after a magistrate ordered him to undergo treatment for substance abuse and avoid contact with her for two years.
“I tell you that it is entirely in your best interest to participate in all the support services I have created for you,” said Magistrate Donna Bacos.
“It is very important that your path to rehabilitation is much more positive and therefore you will be less risky for the community as a whole and for your mother in particular.”
Cave has two other sons, Luke, 30, from his first marriage to Brazilian journalist Vivian Carneiro, and Earl, 21, from his marriage to Susie Bick, whom he married in 1991.
Nick Cave today confirmed the death of his son Jethro Lazenby, whom he saw in 2006. He said: “It is with great sadness that I can confirm that my son Jethro has died. We will be grateful for the privacy of the family at this time. ”
Jethro was born to his Melbourne-based mother, model Bo Lazenby, in 1991, who was in a relationship with Cave at the time.

Jethro had roles in the 2007 film Corroboree and 2011’s My Little Princess – with Isabelle Huppert – but suffered from personal problems for several years after struggling with his mental health.
Although he uses his father’s name to run his own modeling career, Jethro said in the past that he had not met Cave until he was 7 years old.
The 30-year-old was jailed earlier this year after an attack on his mother, Bo Lessenby, in Melbourne.
She found her troubled son at her front door shortly after midnight on March 7, before he persuaded her to let him stay the night.
The next morning, the couple got into an argument when Jethro knelt on his mother’s face, causing bleeding and bruising.
He admitted one charge of illegal assault and breach of court orders after other charges were dropped after a deal with prosecutors, the Herald Sun reported.
Jethro’s lawyer, Sean Gatas, said he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and that influenced his judgment.
Mr Gatas demanded that his sentence be served and that he be released from prison, but Magistrate Donna Bakos replied: “I’m not sure I agree with you.”
