North Korea reported 21 new deaths and another 174,440 people with fever on Saturday as the country struggles to slow the spread of COVID-19 among its unvaccinated population.
Deaths and deaths since Friday have increased the total to 27 deaths and 524,440 illnesses amid the rapid spread of fever since late April. North Korea said 243,630 people had recovered and 280,810 remained in quarantine. State media did not specify how many of the fever and deaths were confirmed as COVID-19 infections.
The country imposed a nationwide blockade on Thursday after confirming its first cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a meeting on anti-virus strategies on Saturday described the epidemic as a historic “huge embarrassment” and called for unity between the government and the people to stabilize the outbreak as soon as possible.
Experts say the failure to control the spread of COVID-19 could have devastating consequences for North Korea, given the country’s poor health system and its 26 million people are largely unvaccinated.
State media reported that tests of virus samples collected on Sunday from an unspecified number of people with fever in the country’s capital, Pyongyang, confirmed that they were infected with the omicron variant. So far, the country has officially confirmed a death related to omicron infection.
The spread of the virus could be accelerated after tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers gathered for a massive military parade in Pyongyang on April 25, where Kim took center stage and showed off the most powerful missiles in his military nuclear program.
