HALLANDALE BEACH, Florida – Residents of a condominium building in Hallandale Beach said they have until Friday night to evacuate the building due to security concerns.
Firefighters and police officers responded to the Hemispheres Condominium in 1965 South Ocean Dr. An electric fire in a mechanical room in Bay North affected water and electricity in four buildings in the complex.
“Currently there is no running water, no air conditioning”, Chap. That’s what Megan Jones, a spokeswoman for the Hallandale Beach Police Department, said.
The sprinkler system, fire alarm system and monoxide and carbon monoxide detectors are not working in the Bay North tower after the fire, officials said.
Steve Terrani was among the residents who had to comply with the mandatory evacuation of Bay North. The other three buildings were under recommended but voluntary evacuation.
“It makes me feel vulnerable, that’s for sure,” Terrani said.
The city and the Red Cross offered temporary shelter at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Center.
