One in every 10 million orange lobsters caught near the West Isles

A rare orange lobster has been caught off the western islands.

It was handed over by a fisherman to the Bar-based fish processing company Barratlantic, which placed it in a tank with other live lobsters.

The chances of a European lobster being orange are one in 10 million, according to the Cornwall-based charity for the conservation of the National Lobster Hatchery.

Lobsters are usually dark blue / black.

The National Lobster Hatchery said there are different theories as to why some lobsters are different colors, such as genetic, diet or adaptation to their habitat.

He added that the lack of a certain protein could be behind the orange color.

Last year, one in two million blue lobsters was unloaded by a fisherman near Aberdeen.
