Police officer, suspect injured in downtown Montreal shooting

Quebec’s Independent Bureau of Investigation (BEI) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting that injured two people, including a Montreal police officer (SPVM).

Police received a 911 call at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday about a standoff with an armed man in Cabot Square.

According to BEI, officers arrived on scene and found a man in possession of a firearm.

However, he refused to obey orders and fled on foot, prompting a police chase.

“While SPVM officers were chasing the man, at least one shot was fired,” the bureau said. “One policeman was shot in the leg.

The BEI continues: “officers briefly lost sight of the man before locating him in an alley” near Hope Avenue and Boulevard René-Lévesque.

The police managed to control the man, and the two victims were transported to the hospital.

The suspect suffered a leg injury that “may have been caused by a gunshot wound.”

The bureau notes that there is no danger to their lives.

Six BEI investigators have been assigned to the case with the support of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

BEI is asking anyone who may have witnessed the event to contact them via their website.
