Ricky Martin’s lawyer has spoken out following allegations of domestic abuse against the singer.
In early July, the Associated Press reported that a restraining order had been filed against Martin. At the time, the applicant’s identity was protected by the Domestic Violence Prevention and Intervention Act. The documents state that the petitioner fears for his safety.
Martin denied these claims. The former Menudo star made a statement on social media about the matter.
“The protective order filed against me is based on completely false allegations, so I will respond through the legal process with the facts and dignity that characterize me,” he wrote.
“As this is an ongoing legal matter, I cannot make any detailed statements at this time. I am grateful for the countless messages of solidarity and receive them with all my heart.”
On July 13, Spanish news site Marca reported that Martin’s nephew, Denis Yadiel Sanchez, filed a complaint against his uncle. Sanchez claims his uncle was physically and psychologically abusive during a seven-month romantic relationship.
Now Marty Singer, Martin’s attorney, is speaking out.
“Unfortunately, the person who made this claim struggles with profound mental health issues,” Singer said in a statement to Yahoo.
“Ricky Martin, of course, has never been – and never will be – involved in any sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew. The idea is not only false, but disgusting,” he continued. “We all hope this man gets the help he so urgently needs. But most of all, we look forward to seeing this horrible case dismissed as soon as a judge gets the facts.
Marca claims the “American Crime Story” star could face up to 50 years in prison if convicted.
Martin is also currently being sued by his former manager Rebecca Drucker. Drucker claims the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer owes her more than $3 million in unpaid commissions.
Variety reports that the documents refer to a “potentially career-ending allegation” that Drucker was able to protect the singer’s career from and bring Martin into 2020.
