Rogers outage in Canada affects thousands of consumers across the country

Rogers acknowledged a major outage affecting its internet and phone services across Canada this morning, affecting cellular and internet connectivity. Downdetector has thousands of reports of problems with Rogers, and problems were reported as early as 5am ET. Another third-party service tracker reports Rogers outages in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

Rogers first addressed the outage in a tweet from his official support account shortly before 9 a.m. ET, saying, “We are aware of the issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully committed to resolving the issue as soon as possible . We will continue to keep you updated as we have more information to share.”

In a statement to The Verge and posted on Twitter, Rogers said: “We are currently experiencing an outage on our cable and wireless networks and our technical teams are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible. On behalf of all of us at Rogers, we sincerely apologize to our customers and will continue to keep you updated as we have more information to share, including when we expect service to be restored. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this issue.”

Rogers did not add more specific information about the outage. However, other service providers that rely on Rogers to connect their customers shed some light on the extent of the disruption. TekSavvy customer service told customers the outage extends to “Ontario, Quebec and the eastern provinces,” with no ETA for a resolution, while the CBC reports that Thunder Bay operator Tbaytel says the Rogers outage is nationwide.

Cloudflare Radar shows the communication between its load-sharing network and Rogers in Canada, showing its normal nighttime pattern before dropping to essentially zero just before 3 a.m. ET and registering a flat line since then. Around the same time, there was a huge spike in BGP messages for the network indicating routing changes, but it is unknown if this was due to the network being offline or part of the cause.

Toronto police tweeted that some people in the city had connection issues calling 911 this morning. “Rogers Network is experiencing some technical difficulties,” the Toronto Police Operations Twitter account said. “We are working to resolve these issues.” In a follow-up tweet, police confirmed that their 911 center was working and advised anyone who needed to call to stay on the line if it got through and try calling again if it didn’t did.

A CBC News report noted that Rogers affiliate Fido is also having problems. The article said the problems affected card payment processing and ATMs across Canada. A CBC radio station in Kitchener, Ont., is also offline and some phone service for the Ottawa Transit Agency is down.

On Twitter, Bank of Montreal told customers that the Rogers outage “affected all financial institutions and caused disruptions to Interac services, BMO toll-free numbers and transaction processing.”

Large areas of Canada are affected by the main ongoing outage; however, it is not yet clear exactly which areas are up or down. Internet disruption tracker NetBlocks has shared real-time data showing Canada’s national connectivity dropping to 75 percent of normal levels.
