Ryan Mailey’s time with the Saskatchewan NDP is coming to an end.
Mailey announced on Thursday, the last day of the spring legislature, that he was stepping down as an MPP for Saskatoon Meewasin. He said his last day to fill the seat would be July 1st.
He thanked a number of colleagues, friends and family members who were present in the legislature – especially his wife Mahli Brindamour.
“Thank you for everything you have in my life. Thank you for being such a great pediatrician. I admire the work you do and the advocacy you do so much. But above all, thank you for being with me.” he said.
Prime Minister Scott Moe confirmed Mailey’s resignation during the meeting and offered a special welcome to Mailey’s supporters who were present in the legislature.
Mine also had a message about Mailey’s two young sons about their father.
“I would just like to tell you two that he did a good job in this legislature and you can both be proud.
Mailey became Saskatoon Meewasin’s MLA in 2017 after a by-election victory.
In the last provincial election, in 2020, Mailey won her seat in Saskatoon Mivasin with 51 percent of the vote.
Meili’s resignation comes after he announced in February that he was also stepping down as party leader, although he said he would remain until a new leader is elected.
Mailey has been the leader of the NDP since March 2018, after two failed attempts to become party leader in 2009 and 2012.
In October 2021, Mailey received 72% support from NDP delegates at the party’s annual congress. A total of 124 delegates, or 28 percent, voted in favor of the leadership review.
The party must now elect its fourth leader since Lorne Calvert retired in 2008.
The leadership vote is scheduled for June in Regina. The two candidates so far are Regina Lakeview NDP MLA Carla Beck and Saskatoon lawyer Caitlin Harvey.
