Max Verstappen did not spare his sympathy for Charles Leclerc, after the Dutchman took advantage of an engine failure at the end of the race for his Formula 1 rival Ferrari to reach an undisputed victory in Azerbaijan on Sunday.
“I would say that nonsense is happening, this is a race, do you understand?”
“It has happened to me, it has happened to many people in the past, and unfortunately it is happening to Charles.

The Ferrari driver fell 34 points behind the Dutchman in the drivers’ championship
“If I was in the same situation, I would also be disappointed, I think that’s very normal, but it’s about how you get out of it.”
Verstappen’s victory on Sunday, his fifth of eight races this season, allowed him to find a team lead in the overall standings.
He is now 21 points ahead of his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez, who finished one or two behind Verstappen on Sunday, with Leclerc 34 points behind in third place.
The 24-year-old, who was nine points behind Verstappen over the weekend, has now failed to turn first place into victory in the last four consecutive races for reasons ranging from lack of reliability to strategic mistakes.
Leclerc headed for the first turn and initially gave the first place to Sergio Perez
Verstappen later overtook his Red Bull teammate to win comfortably and come out 21 points ahead
Sunday’s failure was the second time in three races that Leclerc has stepped down.
This came shortly after his teammate Carlos Sainz also stopped with a hydraulic failure, which led to a double retirement of Ferrari.
Verstappen himself was eliminated twice due to reliability problems this year and fell behind Leclerc by 46 points after the first three races of the season.
“You learn from it, you don’t like it, you get angry, but you turn it around,” he said.
“You always have to stay that way, because something else can happen and you have to prevent these problems from happening.”
