Senior journalist claims Liverpool interested in Raheem Sterling transfer – Liverpool FC

It seems highly unlikely, but a prominent English journalist claims that before Raheem Sterling’s move to Chelsea, Liverpool were interested in the deal.

Sterling is expected to move from Man City to Chelsea in the coming days, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein reporting that he has already agreed personal terms.

With just one year left on his contract, the striker is said to be available for a ‘cut price’, with the signing to be finalized ‘immediately’.

It will be one of the most high-profile transfers of the summer and the first between Man City and Chelsea since Daniel Sturridge joined the London club in 2009.

Aged 27 and already with 320 Premier League appearances and 72 in the Champions League, scoring 154 goals in 466 games during his time with Man City and Liverpool, Sterling could be an excellent addition for Chelsea.

The A mirrorJohn Cross even claimed that the Reds were among the clubs interested in signing the England international before Chelsea secured him.

A cross that serves as A mirrorThe chief football writer also named Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain among Sterling’s candidates.

However, Liverpool have already signed Darwin Nunes and Fabio Carvalho this summer for a fee of £92.7m and it is unlikely that they will actually consider a move for their former number 31.

The report even stated that “it remains to be seen how specific their interest was”, before doubling down that “there is no doubt that the entire European elite was fired up”.

Sterling’s attempts to force a move away from Liverpool in 2015 were, to put it mildly, not well received at Anfield, especially after a sloppy interview with the BBC.

But he has since expressed disappointment at the manner of his departure and admitted in an Instagram Q&A in 2020 that the Reds were “always in my heart” after being asked about a possible return.

However, this smacks of throwaway speculation of Liverpool’s interest based on little fact.

More likely it’s nothing more than an assumption that given his situation, a club of their stature would at least entertain the idea.
