Shazam 2 trailer introduces DCEU’s Rachel Zegler at SDCC 2022

DC launched today’s Warner Bros. San Diego Comic-Con panel on a high note with the first trailer for the upcoming Shazam! a sequel titled Shazam! Wrath of the Gods.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods brings back Zachary Levi as his character, along with Asher Angel as Billy Batson, his high school alter ego. The film also stars Rachel Zegler as one of the Daughters of Atlas, a pious group with no comic book history but who this time around seem to be the villains. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu lead the Daughters of Atlas as Hespera and Calypso. Megan Goode, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler and Grace Fulton also return. The premiere of the film is scheduled for December 21.

In the clip, Shazam gives a quick overview of his own life, swoons over Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and makes the requisite reference to another superhero with a flash on his suit — but the trailer cuts out before we see if Ezra Miller is back in the role.

Fury of the Gods brings back director David F. Sandberg, who directed the original film Original Shazam! writer Henry Gaydon is also returning for the sequel and will team up with Fast & Furious writer Chris Morgan as a co-writer. As you might expect, the trailer is full of Easter eggs, including hints at Starro, the super ape Titano, and Karakan from Aquaman, as well as references to Sandberg and Morgan’s previous work on Annabelle and the Fast and Furious franchise.

Fury of the Gods was originally set for a 2023 release until it got caught up in DC’s massive release date shakeup. After all the changes at the studio, Shazam! Fury of the Gods was pushed back to December 2022, then pushed back once more to its current release date of December 21st. Shazam 2 will now be preceded by Black Adam on October 21 and followed by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives on March 17, 2023.
