His letter came in response to another letter from Angela Raynor, the Labor Party’s deputy leader.
Ms Rayner asked Mr Case a series of questions about his involvement in the alleged job search, including whether he had spoken to the Foundation about the role.
She also asked him if Mr. Johnson had raised the issue with the Queen or another member of the royal family.
Eventually, Ms. Johnson took over as communications director at the Aspinall Foundation, an environmental charity.
In a letter to the cabinet secretary on Thursday night, Ms. Rainer said: “There are now serious questions for the prime minister, to whom he must answer about the potential inadequacy and conflict of interest in his lobbying for highly paid tax-funded work for his partner in 2018, Carrie Johnson.
“Reports indicate that while he was foreign minister, Mr. Johnson tried to appoint Ms. Johnson to work in the foreign ministry in 2018, as well as other roles, including in a royal charity.
Simon Case’s answer
Mr Case said: “I have been informed that there is a publicly announced role and possible volunteering opportunities.
“In line with the Earthshot Prize’s charity status, the publicly advertised role was not publicly funded and each candidate would have to go through a full and open interview process.
“I do not know how this information was used, but as I understand it, Ms. Johnson did not use any of these opportunities.
Angela Raynor is calling for a new ethics adviser
In a separate letter to Lord Evans, chairman of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, Ms Raynor called on officials who were allegedly involved in trying to secure Ms Johnson’s job to provide public evidence.
She said Ben Gascoigne, one of Mr Johnson’s closest aides, and Dominic Cummings, his former chief adviser, should be brought before investigators.
She also called for the appointment of a new emergency ministerial ethics adviser soon to avoid Mr Johnson being “a judge and jury in his own case”.
Downing Street denied that Johnson had recommended his then-fiancée.
Her spokeswoman denied that she had been appointed by the Foundation for the job.
