Parliament Hill was evacuated on Saturday, and a massive police presence descended in the city center in response to a potential “threat to public safety”, Ottawa police said.

No threat was found for several hours, although police warned drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area.

“The investigation into the suspicious incident on Parliament Hill has been completed,” the Ottawa Police Department said via Twitter shortly after 4 p.m. “No threat to public safety has been identified.”

Police issued an initial warning of an “ongoing police investigation” in Parliament Hill around 1:30 p.m., with Wellington Street closed to traffic between Bronson Avenue and Elgin Street and Metcalfe Street closed for several blocks near the Hill.

Parliament officials also received “situational consultations” for 111 Wellington St. – Center Block – and they were told by Parliament’s defense services to “take shelter on the spot”.

“Please note that there is an ongoing operation to deal with a possible threat,” the PPS signal said. “There was an order for shelter issued for the (parliamentary) section, this does not imply any movement in or outside our buildings. Parliament Hill has been evacuated. “

Police shared some information during the Police Action, although video on social media showing a group of about 20 protesters, nourishing speculation that the two events may be linked.

Police on Saturday will not say whether the investigation is in any way related to the demonstration.

A group of protesters chanted “Freedom!” he also gathered at the intersection of Metcalfe and Sparks Street while heavily armed police patrolled parliament.

Police have issued a warning of a “suspicious incident” in the Parliament Hill area.

“Many streets are closed and there is a large police presence. Do not enter the area. Follow the instructions of the police, “said in an earlier tweet.

Heavy-armed tactical police patrolled the city center, while military police, tactical paramedics and firefighters joined the PPS guard.

Investigators spotted mirrors used to check under cars, and there was speculation that a black sedan parked in a loading area near Parliament Hill may have been under suspicion.

Police did not confirm these details.

There were also media reports that arrests had been made and an upcoming report related to a potential terrorist threat. Ottawa police did not confirm these details.
