The first probable case of monkeypox identified in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Kentucky (WKYT) – Public health officials said Friday that the first possible case of monkeypox has been identified in Kentucky.

The positive patient is a resident of Jefferson County. For privacy reasons, no additional patient information will be published. The patient remains isolated and health professionals work to identify anyone with whom the patient may have had close contact while infected.

The initial tests were completed at the Kentucky Public Health Department.

“The identification of the first case of monkeypox in Kentucky is worrying, but not surprising,” said Dr. Stephen Stack, KY’s public health commissioner. “Fortunately, the risk to the general public remains low. We continue to work closely with the CDC and our local health department and health partners to limit the spread of this virus. “

As of June 23, the CDC reported that 173 cases of monkeypox had been identified in 24 US states.
