A very popular restaurant in the center of Belleville will be closed for some time after the devastating thunderstorms on Thursday.

The roofing materials were blown up by three buildings at the northern end of Front Street, including the one housing the Chilangos restaurant.

Owner Marlem Power says she and her staff are busy saving as much food as they can, as well as preparing food packages to donate to the Grace Inn’s homeless shelter.

Belleville officials are working with the building’s owner to determine the best way to repair the roof, and it is unknown how long it will take to close the restaurant.

Chilangos employs about 40 people and Power hopes to find ways to continue their business to help them.

In addition to local Canadians and students, Chilangos employs people from Colombia, Guatemala, India and the Philippines.

Power said the mayor and other city officials were quick to contact her to offer relief after the storm damage, as well as the Belleville Chamber of Commerce.

However, she was disappointed that she had not heard a word from any member or BIA staff at the center since Saturday, adding that her restaurant had brought many people to the center over the past 10 years.
