The House Special Committee investigating Jan. 6, 2021, offered new details Tuesday about a meeting at the White House involving several Republican members of Congress before a joint session of Congress convened to certify the 2020 presidential election.
Democrat Stephanie Murphy of Florida, a committee member, said the Dec. 21 meeting was part of an effort to “spread his false claims and encourage members of the public to fight the Jan. 6 result.”
Vice President Mike Pence, Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff at the time, attended the meeting, along with President Donald Trump.
At the meeting, members discussed election theories advanced by Trump’s personal attorney, John Eastman, who said he believes Pence was able to single-handedly reject the electoral roll in his role as chairman of the joint session.
In reality, Pence’s role was simply to count the votes. On Tuesday, the committee released footage of Pat Cipollone, a Trump White House adviser, refusing to contradict the idea that Eastman’s theory was “crazy.”
Cipollone tried to attend the meeting himself, but was apparently turned away.
Here are the 10 House Republicans who attended the meeting, according to White House visitor logs:
- Representative Mo Brooks of Alabama
- Representative Brian Babin of Texas
- Representative Andy Biggs of Arizona
- Congressman Matt Goetz of Florida
- Representative Louis Gohmert of Texas
- Congressman Paul Gosar of Arizona
- Congressman Andy Harris of Maryland
- Representative Jody Heiss of Georgia
- Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio
- Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania
- Newly elected Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia
The committee previously shared a number of Republicans who sought pardons from Trump in the final days of his administration. Six of those present at the Dec. 21, 2020 meeting — Biggs, Brooks, Goetz, Gohmert, Green and Perry — asked for clemency.
