Traffic in Vancouver: Fatal crash near West 4th

A pedestrian is dead and is under investigation after a collision in Vancouver.

The incident happened near West 4th Avenue and Arbutus Street in Kicilano on Sunday night.

The Vancouver Police Department says a 24-year-old man and a friend were crossing West 4th Avenue on Arbutus Street around 11:30 p.m. when he was hit by a car.

The VPD says the newer silver sedan “seems to travel at high speeds.”

“The driver did not stop and the victim died on the spot,” said a sergeant. Steve Addison in a news release Monday morning.

Addison says the victim was taken a considerable distance and is believed to have been killed instantly.

The VPD says it now has a vehicle matching the suspect’s description in custody and is working to determine for sure if it is involved.

He will not reveal how or where it was found to avoid compromising the investigation.

“If you are a roommate, family member, friend of someone who suddenly has unexplained damage to your car, or who woke up this morning and his car disappeared for reasons they can’t explain. We would like all these people to come forward to talk to our investigators, “Addison said.

The driver has not been identified yet.

“If you are the driver, if you are in a situation, something bad has happened. Please do the right thing. A man died here. We ask you to do the right thing, to come forward, “Addison said.

The VPD clashes investigation unit spent the night gathering evidence from the crime scene and said a number of witnesses had been interviewed.

Police are asking companies in the area or anyone with a video camera to review their footage and contact them if they have images of the suspect vehicle.

“Anyone who has not yet come out has been asked to contact investigators immediately,” Addison said.

He says that based on the evidence, the driver would have known he had hit someone and should have stayed at the scene.

“This is a crime under the Criminal Code. If you are involved in a collision, especially a very serious collision like this. You are required to stay and participate, “Addison said.

Police believe the vehicle was traveling east on West 4th Avenue during the collision.

The intersection was reopened in time for the morning trip.
