Tributes are pouring in for the musician and actor of Gwynedd, who “was always ready with a smile”

Tribute was paid to the talented actor and musician from Gwynedd, who died suddenly. Difrig Evans, 43, best known for his roles in Rownd a Rownd and vocalist in the Welsh band Topper, is believed to have died on Thursday.

The father of two, a native of Penygroes, was known by many as “Dyfrig Topper”, reports BBC Cymru Fyw. He is described as “a wonderful soul full of talent, fun, enthusiasm and positive energy” by those who knew him.

Former Ysgol student Dyffryn Nantlle moved to Scotland in the early 2000s, but five years earlier he played Aruel Jones’ character – or Ari Steefs – in the series Rownd a Rownd. In an interview to mark the series’ 21st anniversary, he said being part of the series was a “dream come true” for him.

In 2002, he joined Talcen Caled as Huw Williams. He was also part of the Emyn Roc a Roll series, playing the character Eryl, a member of the band and one of the main characters.

Dyfrig also appears in series such as Tipyn o Stad, Gwlad yr Astra Gwyn and Gwyll. Between 2017 and 2018, he portrayed Kevin in two series of Darren Drew Nessa.

Linos Griffin-Williams, S4C’s chief content officer, said the actor would be “unfortunately missing”. She said: “Daifrig’s talent includes favorite characters for our children’s content and more subversive characters for series like Talcen Caled.

“Not to mention his abilities and undeniable contribution as a musician. Our sympathies are with his family and friends.”

In his early teens, he became a member of the band Paladr with his brother Iwan Evans, and in 1995 released their first song, called “Dwi’m yn gwbod. Pam?” Until 1996, the band’s name was changed to Topper.

After releasing three records, the band disbanded in 2001, but in 2006 Dyfrig released an album called Idiom as a solo musician. In 2019, he finished third in the Song for Wales competition with the song LOL. Describing his death as a “huge loss”, the record company JigCal thanked Dyfrig “for the evergreen tunes”.

Actor Emlin Homer Roberts was among many who worked with him on projects and described him as “a naturally instinctive actor, with a comedic moment and a talented musician.” According to BBC Radio Cymru chief Dafid Meredith, Difrig was a “huge hero” who was “always ready with a smile and a lively conversation”.

He added: “The Welsh rock scene is quieter today and I will feel the loss of Daifrig personally and professionally. But one thing is for sure: his music and spirit will live on.”

Super Furry Animals musician Groff Reese said: “Sad and shocking news – the sweet tones of Dyfrig, Topper and Paladr are unforgettable.” Rhian Cadwaladr, who played his mother in Rownd a Rownd, said his natural talent was manifested “from an early age. She said on Facebook: “Sleep quietly, little Dyfs.”

Host Aled Hughes echoed her feelings and described him as “one of those bright, shining stars who will stay forever.” Daifrig leaves his children and wife Elaine.
