US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) was arrested in Washington, DC
Omar’s staff confirmed her arrest Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Omar’s office said the congresswoman would appear at the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday to protest the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Omar was expected to attend the event with other lawmakers, including the following Democrats:
- Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.)
- Congressman Cory Bush (D-Missouri)
- Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-New York)
- Representative Sarah Jacobs (D-Calif.)
- Rep. Madeline Dean (D-Pennsylvania)
There is no information whether all the MPs who attended the event were arrested.
Although Capitol Police did not release the names, they say a total of 34 people — including 16 members of Congress — were arrested for blocking First Street Northeast.
Police said it was against the law to block traffic and added that they issued three standard warnings before arresting some of the demonstrators who refused to leave the street.
