The Supreme Court on Friday upheld restrictions on abortions in Mississippi and lifted the constitutional right to abortion, which was first established in Rowe v. Wade in 1973. Here’s a look at the court’s path from establishing the right to abortion nearly 50 years ago to his withdrawal today.
What is Rowe vs. Wade?
The Roe case involved a pregnant woman from Texas who asked for a court declaration that state laws that criminalize the commission or attempted abortion are unconstitutional. The Supreme Court agreed by 7-2 votes and found that the right to abortion is a fundamental freedom protected by the 14th Amendment, which states that the states cannot deprive people of life, liberty or property without due process of law. The decision was written by Nixon’s appointments, Judge Harry Blackman.
