Winnipeg Police: A woman died, two others in hospital after a car crashed into a tree

One woman is dead and two others are unstable after a car crashed into a tree on Monday.

The incident began around 12:45 a.m. when Winnipeg Police Department officers tried to stop traffic in the Deer Lodge neighborhood. However, the police said that the driver did not stop and set off.

Police then found the car in block 400 on Truro Street, where it crashed into a tree.

The three people in the car were taken to hospital. A man driving the car and a teenage passenger were taken to hospital in an unstable condition. A woman who was reported by police to be a passenger in the car was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she died of her injuries.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), the Manitoba Police Supervisory Authority, has been notified and is investigating the incident as it involves a death. It says that a civilian observer has been requested.

The IIU is asking anyone who may have information or video to help with this investigation to call 1-844-667-6060.

The IIU said no further details would be provided while the investigation continues.
