Work-life balance: Canada’s cities are among the best in the world

A new report says Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto are among the top 20 cities in the world when it comes to work-life balance.

The 2022 Work-Life Balance Index, compiled by security firm Kisi, looks at 51 cities in the United States and 49 cities around the world.

“Instead of being an index of vitality or a ranking of the best cities to work for, the survey seeks to show which cities provide the healthiest work-life balance for their citizens,” Kisi said in the report.

More than 130 data points were measured on work intensity, society and fitness to live in the city, including the percentage of remote jobs, the average number of days off, access to mental health, housing affordability and cultural and entertainment offerings. the city.

Oslo is at the top of the list, followed by Bern, Helsinki, Zurich and Copenhagen. Ottawa is the highest-ranked Canadian city on the list, ranking seventh with 95.51 out of 100.

Vancouver is the second highest ranked city on the list, ranking 16th and scoring 92.23. Toronto is the 19th city for work-life balance with a score of 91.12.

Among the Canadian cities on the list, Calgary had the lowest score. The city ranks 30th on the list worldwide and receives a score of 89.38.

Dubai, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Montevideo are the cities found to have the highest rates of congestion. The list defines “overworked” as a full-time employee who works more than 48 hours per working week. More than 16% of people in these cities are defined as congested, compared to only 10% in Canadian cities.
