Mateusz Gamrot wins unanimously against Tsarukyan

LAS VEGAS – The main event between Mateusz Gamrot and Arman Tsarukyan was the incredible five rounds of action, proving exactly why this match deserved the highest UFC charge on ESPN 38.

Both lightweight athletes entered the first major event of their UFC career, and both men wanted to make a statement on the big stage. When the dust settled after 25 minutes of intense action, the judges were unanimous in their decision, giving Gamroth (21-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) to Tsarukyan (18-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC).

Both fighters tried to establish their game at the beginning of the battle. Gamroth tried to get a takedown after grabbing one leg and lifting it high, but Tsarukyan somehow managed to stay on his feet. Moments later, Tsarukyan finished a beautiful takedown, and a few wild fights for a position soon followed.

The action remained hasty in the second round. After several initial exchanges, a thunderbolt from Tsarukyan into Gamrot’s body echoed in the UFC Apex. Tsarukyan tried to bring the battle to the ground again, but was wonderfully turned by Gamrot. Another powerful jester from Tsarukyan hit the body as he seemed to beat Gamrot in the first two rounds.

Tsarukyan’s powerful strike continued at the beginning of the third round. He opened with a new thunderous kick in the body and a few minutes later struck Gamrot with his right hand. Gamroth grabbed one leg again, but failed to bring the battle to the mat.

Moments later, however, he managed to catch Tsarukyan and make his way to his back. Gamrot failed to secure the position, but Tsarukyan worked freely before serious damage or attempts to pass occurred. They returned to the exchange of strong blows until the round was over.

Gamrot came out shooting in the fourth round and made a few big shots early. Tsarukyan’s spinning fist landed and sent Gamrot down, but he recovered quickly. Another strong blow to the body was scored by Tsarukyan when Gamrot shot for and finished the takedown. Gamroth took his opponent’s back and looked for a submission, but the battle would go to the last round.

Tsarukyan struck a beautiful external kick to sweep Gamrot off his feet early. Gamroth returned to his feet and kept the tension high, firing for a beautiful takedown a moment later. After mastering Tsarukyan on the mat, they returned to their feet and continued to let the blows fly. Gamroth sought another takedown to end the battle. Tsarukyan managed to reverse his position in the last seconds and strike a few blows before the last horn sounded in this very fun main event.

All three official judges marked the battle 48-47 for Gamroth, marking the victory with a unanimous decision for the Polish fighter.

During his post-match interview, Gamroth made it clear who he wanted to mix the next one with.

“Now I want to fight Justin Getty,” he said in an interview after a fight with Michael Bisping. “Justin Getty is the most brutal man in this division. I want to fight him next time. “

With the victory, Gamroth makes four in a row after the only failure in his professional career against Guram Kutateladze in 2020. Entering Saturday’s match with consecutive breaks against Scott Holtzman, Jeremy Stevens and Diego Ferreira, the Polish-born fighter is already in a great position. to take the next level of competition in the lightweight category.

Tsarikyan entered the USA TODAY SPORTS / MMA Junkie in the lightweight rankings, which probably means that Gamroth will rise from the honorary mentions to a ranked fighter in the next update of the ranking.

On the other hand, the UFC’s first major event for Tsarukyan marked the second loss in his series with the promotion. He failed in his UFC debut, rejecting a unanimous decision against Islam Mahachev in 2019. Tsarukyan withdrew well after winning five straight victories, including consecutive stops against Christos Giagos and Joel Alvarez in his previous two matches.
