St. Catherine’s Mayor Walter Sandjik said stricter laws focused on illegal weapons were needed after one person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting in the city early Sunday morning.
“I am just angry with the shooting. I know that the NRP is constantly working to find the perpetrators of the shooting and bring them to justice. But my anger will not lead to less gun-based violence, “Senjik said in a statement posted on social media.
“We need to do more as a society. We need stricter laws focusing on the illegal trafficking of weapons, the illegal possession of weapons and the illegal use of firearms. We need a justice system that imposes severe penalties on those who break our laws. We need to focus on the root causes of gun violence in our communities. ”
Niagara Regional Police said they were called to Lake Street and Pleasant Avenue at 3:40 a.m. for gunfire signals.
One person has been pronounced dead on the spot. Two others were taken to hospital.
The second person was then transported to an out-of-town hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The third is treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The NRP Homicide Squad calls on all witnesses or anyone in the area who has a camera or video surveillance to contact the police.
Sunday’s shooting was the second violent incident in St. Catharines in just over a month.
On May 11, police were called to the Fairview Mall on Geneva Street, where Karat Jewelers were robbed with weapons. Two people in the store were sprayed with a substance believed to be bear spray. A third man, the owner of the family store, was shot in the leg in front of the mall entrance after the suspects were chased to the parking lot. Two suspects are still wanted and the case remains open.
In May, the federal government introduced legislation to freeze the sale of pistols this fall with new measures that would prevent the purchase, sale and transfer of pistols.
Senjik said that while he personally supported the ban on guns, he acknowledged that the ban on small arms would not reduce the use of illegal handguns unless the laws are better designed and fully implemented in the courts.
“Other countries have built roads that have significantly reduced gun violence, and we can do the same. It will take all the government’s orders to achieve this, and that is something we all need to demand. ”
The area around Lake and Pleasant was closed to traffic on Sunday as detectives investigated and a team of detectives investigated the scene. The police announced that no other information has been reported so far.
Death is the third murder committed in Niagara in 2022.
